Overview

Munnar is a town which is located in the Western Ghats mountain range of India Kerala state. It is a hill station and former resort of the British Raj Elite, it is surrounded by a tea plantation that was established in the late 19th century. Eravikulam National park, which is a habitat of the endangered mountain goat Nilgiri tahr. Munnar is a hill station that is found in the Idukki district. Munnar is situated around 1,600 meters (5,200ft). Elevation was 1,532km and the population was 39,471 (2001), literacy is (84.9%). Munnar is also known as the “Kashmir of South India”. It is a popular honeymoon destination. the official language which is spoken in Munnar is Malayalam and the Density of the area is 170/km(440/sqm).

Tracing Munnar’s Origins: A Confluence of Rivers, Tribes, and Colonial Exploration

The name Munnar came or and it is believed that three rivers flow in this region. The three rivers are Mudirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundali river.

This region was inhabited by hunter-gatherer tribals like Malayaarayan and Muthuvan for nearly thousands of years. Duke of  Wellington was the British first person to pass through Munnar during Tippu Sultan’s campaign in Travancore. The first survey of this terrain was undertaken by Benjamin  Swayne Ward in 1816-1817. John Daniel Munro is a person who noted that Munnar land is suitable for coffee plantations. Henry Turn and his cousin Aw Turner both obtained ownership of the Cardamon Hills from Raja of Travancore and they started clearing the forest around Devikulam in 1879. Other Europeans started tea plantations throughout the area in 1880.

Best time to visit

The best to visit Munnar is from December to February. The winter month is the best time to visit Munnar because of the pleasant weather. The minimum temperature during this year drops to ten degree Celsius. The famous food in Munnar is cylindrical steamed rice cake cooked with coconut shaving which resembles puttu. It is an extremely popular dish in Munnar served with Kadala curry.

Animals like snakes are also found in this hill station the Canopy is a tropical forest of Munnar in this surrounding region that is rich with a plethora of mammals, reptiles, insects, and birds. Commonly known as the large-scaled pit viper, it is a beautiful snake that is known as “near threatened”.

The route to Munnar there are few challenges because it is located deep within the Western Ghats, at an altitude of 5,600feet, it roads up to a quaint hill station located in the Ludduki district with sharp winding and also it consists of narrow zigzag and steep. The route also consists of ten hairpin bends. from Rajamala to Munnar it takes up to 14km. the Chinnar trip in which the paths are flanked by scenic tea gardens. The Devikulam route is an interesting road trip. the coldest hill station of Munnar according to the Friday record is the lowest temperature of the season found in,  the region of Devikulam, Lakkad, and Gudumala recording zero degree celsius in the morning.

Journey to Munnar: Access, Climate, and Adventurous Escapes

The ideal way to reach Munnar is by train from the nearest cities like Banglore or Chennai. There are no direct trains to Munnar. Munnar does not have a rail route. the nearest railway station in Munnar is Alwaye(Aluva) or Angamaly which is nearly 120km away from Munnar. OOTY is cooler than Munnar because the elevation of OOTY is higher when compared to Munnar. OOTY is around 700m+.Munnar experiences heavy rainfall due to Southwest Monsoon. Munnar is the best area during the Monsoon and the area around Munnar is lush green and adorned with little streams and streamlets. The temperature may drop too low as 2 degree Celsius during this season. The nearest Airport in Munnar is Cochin International Airport, which is around 110km away by road. From Cochin, you can hire a cab to reach Munnar.

The Madurai International Airport is 140km away from Munnar. Aventure lovers and nature admire this as the best place for the campaign at night. There are several campsites at Chokramudi, Periyar, suryanelli, and many other places to spend a night with a campfire, entertainment, and star-gazing.

Munnar’s Ecological Riches: A Sanctuary for Endangered and Endemic Species

Munnar tour is a protected area especially known for several threatened and endemic species including the Nilgiri Thar, the grizzled giant squirrel, the  Nilgiri wood pigeon, the elephant, the gaur, the Nilgiri langur, the sambar, and the neelakurinji (that blossoms only once in twelve years).most of the native flora and fauna of Munnar which is disappeared due to several habitat fragmentations. However many species continue to survive in well-protected areas near sanctuaries like new Kurinjimala sanctuary in the east, the Chinnar wildlife sanctuary.
